Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn created one of the most remarkable musical partnerships in jazz history. Their music is elegant, deeply expressive, full of swing, and endlessly inventive.
For this special evening, vocalist Vicki Burns joins pianist John Di Martino and her quartet to explore the music of these two legendary composers through beloved classics, lesser-heard gems, and original arrangements created for the program.
John Di Martino is known for his deep understanding of Ellington and Strayhorn’s music. His recent album, Passion Flower, is devoted to the compositions of Billy Strayhorn and reflects his close connection to this rich and sophisticated repertoire.
Burns has long featured Duke Ellington’s music in her performances and recordings. Her recent album, Lotus Blossom Days, includes two Strayhorn compositions, “Lotus Blossom Days” and “Bittersweet,” both featuring lyrics by renowned New York lyricist Roger Schore. Her first album, Siren…
