About the event

This program explores the evolving partnership between violin and piano — not as soloist and accompaniment, but as equal voices in conversation.

In Mozart’s Violin Sonata No. 18 in G Major, one of his early works to challenge convention, the violin steps beyond a purely accompanying role. The two instruments share melodic responsibility, shaping the music together with clarity and balance.

Written just two decades later, Beethoven’s Sonata No. 9 in A Major, “Kreutzer,” represents a culmination of this idea. Expansive in scale and dramatic in character, it unfolds in what Beethoven described as a “highly concertante style” — almost like a concerto for two players. At times fiery and intense, at times lyrical and intimate, it becomes a sweeping dialogue between equals.

The program concludes with Josef Suk’s Love Song, originally written for solo piano and later arranged for violin and piano by his fellow countryman Jaroslav Kocián. Here,…
