About the event
The Marcus Shelby Quartet presents “Odds Against Tomorrow,” a program honoring the enduring legacy of the Modern Jazz Quartet (MJQ).
Led by bassist Marcus Shelby, the quartet features Dillon Vado on vibraphone, Greg Jacobs on piano, and Jemal Ramirez on drums. Together they revisit the elegant, chamber-influenced sound that defined the Modern Jazz Quartet under the leadership of pianist and composer John Lewis from 1952 to 1997.
The program includes selections from the MJQ’s celebrated repertoire, including “Django,” “La Ronde Suite,” “Bags Groove,” “Skating in Central Park,” “Concorde,” “Versailles,” and the title piece “Odds Against Tomorrow,” originally written by John Lewis for the 1959 film noir directed by Robert Wise and starring Harry Belafonte.
Alongside these works, the quartet will perform original compositions and arrangements inspired by the MJQ tradition—blending swing, blues, and classical influence in a style that remains both refined and deeply expressive.
