A rare two-night program honoring the legacy of Miles Davis and John Coltrane — bringing together pianist Larry Vuckovich, who witnessed their historic 1957 San Francisco performance, and rising trumpet Skylar Tang, one of the most compelling young voices in jazz today.

When the Miles Davis Quintet with John Coltrane came to San Francisco for the first time in 1957, performing at the famed Blackhawk club, pianist Larry Vuckovich was there in person, witnessing this historic moment.


Miles’ legendary quintet featured one of the greatest rhythm sections in jazz history — Red Garland on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Philly Joe Jones on drums. Larry later became a member of Philly Joe Jones’ quintet, touring across Germany, Switzerland, and Italy, recording a live album at the Pescara Jazz Festival in 1969, and performing with him in San Francisco.
